Your Opinions Required

Hello Crafters and followers of mine. I have a dilemma, of which I would greatly appreciate your opinion on.

I have the opportunity to have a sponsored giveaway for a crafting product, but they are asking for all the email addresses for those that enter.

On one hand I can understand their position as it's potential customers for them to reach out too, but then again, how many of us wish to be approached this way?, but then again they are offering a product free of charge to someone.

So I'm asking all of you, would you enter to win this product knowing your email address would be provided to the sponsor?

I would of course post that by entering you will allow the sponsor to have access to your email address, leaving this as a choice whether you wish to enter or not.

I defintely would not enter.
I've had problems with emails when I've asked to unsubscribe that I've had to threaten to report them.
If their product is that good then they shouldn't need our emails addresses. Sounds a bit like timeshare people or those that tell us we've won holidays. That's my opinion anyway xx

I agree with Kanda I wouldn't share my email in that sort of situation either. sorry Donna...hugs xx

I think they are asking a bit much of you Donna.

But I guess it all depends on A) what the product is and how likely people are going to want one and B) Are you allowed to write in the post that all those that enter would have their emails passed on to the sponsor?

The spam filter I use is pretty good at weeding out the crap, and any that do get through as long as I mark them as spam it stops them from getting to my inbox in the future.

Hugs to you
Elaine xx

If you are passing on personal information (like an email address) to a third party, the individual who provides the informaiton must be told beforehand. Then they have the choice of whether or not to give you their information. If you want some comprehensive advice, visit the Information Commissioner's Office website at www.ico.gov.uk. Hope this helps.

Would we be able to tick a box or some such saying we do not wish to receive offers from that company or from any other companies? And hope that the company plays fair and sticks to their promise.

I regularly get 10-15 spam per day - thankfully it is filtered out. But I still have to check! I am fed up with it and hate the fact that my name and details are out there, as such.

However to have the chance to win something - that is a quid pro quo type of thing I suppose!

Hope this helps you hun Karen x

If it is for a crafting product from a crafting company I would enter. I have different e-mails for different things. One is setup for things like this. I think as long you tell people up front (which you said you would do) it is their choice whether to enter or not.

For me I would have to see which company it is. If it is one I use I wouldn't mind because they probably already have my address. More than likely I would not enter but if you offer the option to enter or not the choice is ours. Hugs, Robin

I don't agree with 'conditional' sponsors i.e. using email addresses :( It just rubs me the wrong way. If I choose to give my email (and I do at times) then that's my choice. I'm glad to hear that you are so upfront about this Donna. You rock!!! So... would I enter knowing I'm giving my email address? If it was an 'out of this world' prize... maybe. Thanks for asking :)

Thanks for asking our opinion.
I would not enter in this case.

It would put me off to be honest Donna.

I hate junk/unsolicited emails and have tried very hard to keep my inbox "clean"...

Sorry sweetie..

It would put me off too. Unless it was a company I would be happy to use or already subscribe to then I probably would give it a miss. Christine

Hi Donna I think as long as you are up front with people and make it perfectly clear that their e mail address will be forwarded to the sponsor then it would be ok. If they were a company that I liked or used then I wouldn't have a probem, I already subscribe to quite a few. However if the company wasn't very well known and I didn't like their products then I would not enter. Unfortunately I already get so much spam each day I guess one more wouldn't make much difference! xx

I don't have a problem with this, you can always "unsubscribe". But I do understand that a lot of people don't like to give out personal information.

I don´t like the idea but also it depends who is the sponsor... If they have the option to unsuscribe (but real, not fake) I wouldn´t mind... and of course, it depends what is the giveaway :)
Thanks for asking...

l think emails are personal and should be given the choice if you want to submit it so l wouldn't allow mine to be given away in this manor! x

I would not enter and I agree, they are asking too much from you and the participants. The sponsor already receives advertising from the blog and each DT member when that particular challenge is posted so yes... I don't think it is fair for them to ask you for that information - look for another sponsor.

Thanks for asking Donna. I would not enter because I also think it's a bit much what they are asking from you. And I hate to get spammed with such emails. I absolutely agree with Marilyn they are getting enough attention / advertising through your and the DT's blogs. And if I were you I would be careful as well as you can get always in trouble with things like that. Even if you state it on your blog that the emails are being forwared to a company...people often don't read etc....and then it's you who has all the trouble on your hands. I would try to find another sponsor.

Hugs,
Iris

I think it depends on who it is and why they want the addresses. If they are going to bombard people then no, but one email and nothing else wouldnt be too bad, so long as it was clear that it would happen if you entered the competition.

Colleen said...

I would need more information about the sponsor first and then who's to say that they wouldn't turn around and sell our email addresses to other companies / sponsors.

I pretty much agree with what seems to be the majority. It would depend on the dollar value of the prize but for the most part, I think I'd object to my email address being shared with a vendor under these circumstances. If the prize is sizable enough, I might reconsider though.

Hugs, Annie

I suppose if it were someone that I already associate with then I would probably enter. But if it were a new to me company I probably wouldn't enter. If you give them emails they may use them themselves but they could also sell them to other companies. I wouldn't appreciate that.

Yvonne Morentin said...

depends on the company. I don't think it is fair for them to ask you to provide emails. If they state before (as with other contest, with a little box) by checking this box I agree to give my email to be shared with ... then we are making that choice. I personally would have to know where my email is going before I would give it up for a contest.

zehra said...

As long as u r upfront, it is then the choice of the follower to apply or to, I would if it is craft related.

Leslie said...

I would not enter. It's unfortunate that many of the scam, spam and unsolicited emails we already get every day are due to our email addresses being sold. It's pretty pathetic that they need you to do their dirty work just to give one of their items away as a prize. Just sayin.

Leslie

I agree with many of the people who have said that as long as people know up front, they have the choice of deciding whether to enter or not. I'm glad to see it is the law (or it appears in Britain anyways not sure how it is over here in Canada, the States, or rest of the world) that people need to be notified up front if their email address is being forwarded on to a third party. Personally, I have enough email to deal with and for the chance in a bazillion that I might win something and then possibly never be able to unsubscribe my address, I for one will not be entering. That's my two cents before taxes.

I would have to agree with the way Yvonne put it. The only other thing is if you went ahead with the contest, you may not get very many that would enter it anyway, given the comments here. Maybe you will come across one eventually that wouldnt require so much from you or the contestants. Thanks for asking for our opinion, I respect you for that. Have a great day and bless your decision.

I would be hesitant :) Thanks for asking Donna.
